Predeformation loading capacity of various stopper types of Kirschner wires

Abstract

The predeformation loading capacity of five different stopper configurations of Kirschner wires are evaluated quantitatively on an experimental model by using the Instron device. Traction forces were applied to Kirschner wires with normal beaded stoppers (Type 1), filled beaded stoppers (Type 2), closed loop stoppers (Type 3), open loop stoppers (Type 4) and double loop stoppers (Type 5), 7 times for each type. Results were evaluated by the Student's-t test. Type 1 Kirschner wires demonstrated the highest and Type 4 the lowest level of resistance to traction. Predeformation loading capacity during the plastic deformation phase was largest for Type 2 Kirschner wires. These quantitative evaluations infer that Type 2 wires should be preferred for patients having a normal cortical bone quality, while Type 5 wires should be reserved for those in whom cortical bone quality is poor, e.g. osteoporosis patients.
