Musculus semimembranosus and its relation with medial collateral ligament (an experimental study)
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the distal portion of musculus semimembranosus (MS) and its relation with medial collateral ligament (MCL). Thirty human cadaver knee joint were used in this study. Except for MCL, MS, joint capsule, popliteus, gastrocnemius other soft tissues were dissected. The relationship of tibial side of MS with MCL and other tissues were investigated. MCL lengths were measured and proportional distance between proximal and distal attachment of MCL to joint line was established. As a result, it was shown that MS attached to tibia from three common area with expansions towards gastrocnemius, popliteus and posterior capsule. The range of MCL lengths 9 to 13 cm and proportional distance between proximal and distal attachment of MCL to joint line was 1/3. Anterior and posterior portions of MS were respectively at the bottom and at the top of MCL. It was shown that in both extension and valgus stress MS stand like a tendinous pillar in posteromedial corner. Anterior and posterior advancement of MS in posteromedial rotator instability abrogates its insertion, thus the functions in this area can become minimized.
