Diagnosis and treatment criteria of osteoid osteoma

Abstract

The number of the patients diagnosed and treated as osteoid osteoma at our hospital were 19 from 1988 to 1995. Because of the short follow-up time 4 cases excluded from the presented study. Therefore, diagnostic criteria and treatment results are evaluated on the 15 patients (11 males and 4 females). The average age at the time of diagnosis was 17 years (from 1. 5 to 48 years, median 14 years). The clinical features were night pain and localized pain in most cases. There was distinct pain relief by salicylate in 60% of the patients. The duration of symptoms before diagnosis averaged 10 months (from 2 months to 30 months). Most of the lesions were located in the lower extremities (14 cases, 93.3%), predominantly in the femur (8 cases, 53.3%). The X-ray findings in the affected area were classical of the lesion in only 41.1% of the cases. Therefore, preoperative localization of the nidus was aided by either scintigraphy, CT scan or MR. Intraoperative localization of the lesion by use of radiograms and by taking X-rays of the excised specimen has been done for being sure. All cases underwent curettage or en bloc resection of the lesion, and all patients were symptom free immediately after the operation, except for one recurrence.
