Results of surgical treatment in patellar fractures

Abstract

Forty-seven patellar fractures treated among 1990-1995, either by modified AO tension band technique or soft tissue cerclage wiring and anterior tension band (Pyrford) or soft tissue cerclage wiring alone were reviewed retrospectively from 13 to 59 months (average 41 months) after the operation. The average age of 34 male and 13 female patients was 41 (17-79). The patients were evaluated using Levack's scoring system. Three different methods of osteosynthesis with conflicting results concerning stability and clinical outcome in several publications were compared in our clinic. It was found that the modified AO tension band technique and soft tissue cerclage wiring with anterior tension band technique give better results than cerclage wiring alone because they are more stable and rigid than the latter and early range of motion exercises can be started.
