Arthroscopic treatment of symptomatic mediopatellar plica lesions: Medium-term follow-up

Abstract

This study included 29 patients in whom arthroscopic resection of isolated symptomatic mediopatellar plica was performed between January 1990- December 1992. There were 18 males and 11 females whose ages ranged 19 to 61 years (mean36.4 years). In 18 of these patients chondromalacia was also accompanied. Clinical outcome after arthroscopic resection was evaluated at an average of 42.7 months (ranged 30 to 63 months). Excellent and good results were obtained in 22 (%76) of the patients according to Lysholm scale. Rest of the patients who did not improve showed Grade II and III chonrdomalacia. The period between onset of symptoms and evaluation of the patients was nearly one year . It is concluded that arthroscopic resection of isolated symptomatic mediopatellar plica was effective in %76 of 29 patients and poor results were mostly seen in patients with higher Grade of chondromalacia.
