Arthroscopic reduction and fixation of tibial eminentia fractures

Abstract

Although the fractures of the eminentia intercondyllaris are well defined and classified, there are still controversies about the methods of treatment for Type II and III fractures. Between 1992-1996, 13 patients with separated eminentia fractures were treated with the help of arthroscopy. Arthroscopic surgical procedures were applied to Type III fractures. Fixation was achieved with sutures in 8 patients, and with screws in 5. The mean follow-up was 17,3 months (3-45). Nonunion was not recorded. As a result, definite diagnosis of eminentia fractures and the accompanying pathologies can be treated simultaneously in the same arthroscopic surgical procedure. Anatomic reduction and stable fixation can be realized by this method. The advantage of minimal surgery the arthroscopy serves to general population is the resulting relative short period between the operation and rehabilitation. The applicability and the improving success of the method will enhance with increasing experience about.
