The effect of Tenoxicam on bone repair: A biomechanical study in rats

Abstract

The effect of tenoxicam on bone repair in the femur of 20 Sprague-Dawley rats (10 control, 10 test) after hole injury was studied using biomechanical methods. The test group received 8 mg/kg/day of tenoxicam until the rats were sacrificed on the 21st postoperative day. The torsional strength of the femur (n=32) and the intact tibia (n=32) was measured as the maximum torque capacity in 16 rats. The torsional strengths were as follows: femur control group 0.342 ± 0.061 Nm, test group 0.275 ± 0.037 Nm (p=0.060); tibia control group 0.130 ± 0.021 Nm, test group 0.118 ± 0.043 Nm (p=0.519) . Tenoxicam had no statistically significant effect upon the torsional strength of the femora with hole injury and the intact tibiae (p<0.05)
