Variations of the extensor pollicis brevis and abductor pollicis muscles longus and their clinical importance

Abstract

Knowledge of the anatomical variations of the extensor pollicis brevis EPB and abductor pollicis longus (APL) muscles is important for during the operating on the hand. APL ve EPB variations were investigated on 15 cadaver arms. Variations encountered were classified as Origo, Muscle belly, Tendon, Insertion. Clinical importance of APL and EPB variations was examined in the light of the related literature. Awareness of these variations are important for a full understanding of the extensor and abductor apparatus of the thumb.
