The role of entrapment neuropathy in the etiology of heel pain: an anatomic study

Abstract

In this study, in order to shed light on the etiology of heel pain, anatomic dissection was carried out with respect to calcaneal spur and entrapment neuropathy. Anatomic dissections were performed on 9 feet . We investigated the presence of spur, branches that the tibial nerve gives off on the medial surface of calcaneus and the nerve innervating abductor digiti quinti muscle (NADQ). Additionally, anatomic measurements were done on these nerves. NADQ, after bending towards the lower part of calcaneus passed by an average of 12.54 mm next to calcaneal tuberosity. Calcaneal spur was detected only on one foot (%11). It did not have any direct contact with NADQ and plantar fascia. Multiple calcaneal branches terminated in fatty tissue. We did not observe any anatomic structure that compression neuropathy plays an important role in the etiology of heel pain.
