Our results of surgical treatment in impingement syndrome of the shoulder

Abstract

We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of modified Neer acromioplasty in the treatment of impingement syndrome. Retrospective studies in 25 patients were carried out. Of these patients 19 were female, 6 were male and their average age at time of operation was 55 years. AP transaxillary and apical shoulder radiographs were obtained. Also all of the patients were examined by sonography. The patients diagnosed as stage 2 impingement syndrome were injected 1ml corticosteroid and 5ml lidocaine in subacromial space. After this procedure symptom free patients are followed by physical treatment. Two patients who did not benefit from injection and twenty-three patients who did not benefit from physical treatment were treated surgically. Surgical results were evaluated with two criteria, pain and motion restriction. Our results were very good 84% (n:21), good 8% (n:2) and poor 8% (n:2). In the light of our results modified. Neer acromioplasty is a reliable and efficient surgical technique in the treatment of stage 2 impingement syndrome.
