Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) in orthopaedics

Abstract

ESWL gained interest in orthopedics recently, especially in the treatment of tendinitis. Three sessions of ESWL with 1 month intervals were performed to 34 patients including 28 shoulder impingement syndromes, 4 lateral humeral epicondilitis and 2 Achilles tendinitis. Twenty (77%) patients with shoulder impingement, 2 (50%) patients with lateral humeral epicondilitis got benefit. However, it was ineffective in 2 cases (100%) with Achilles tendinitis, 2 cases (50%) with lateral humeral epicondilitis and 6 cases (23%) with shoulder impingement syndromes. As a result, ESWL should be considered as an alternative therapy in the treatment of shoulder impingement syndrome. But, this study is very limited to give idea about the efficacy of ESWL in the treatment Achilles or humeral lateral epicondilitis.
