The pronator teres syndrome

Abstract

The pronator teres syndrome is a chronic compression neuropathy of the median nerve by various agent in the region between the Struthers ligament and the arch of the flexor digitorum superficialis. Clinic presentation has pain in the volar surface of the proximal forearm and sensation disorders from tenderness to paresthesia in the hand dermatomes of the median nerve. The findings were occurred or aggravated by various provocative tests. EMG is helpful for the diagnosis. The carpal tunnel syndrome must be eradicated from this situation. Because, it may mimic the carpal tunnel syndrome which is the most common compression neuropathy in the upper extremity or may be together. (Double crush syndrome) The conservative methods must be tried initially. When no beneficial effect confirms on the initial cure, the treatment will continue comprehensive release of the median nerve by the surgical methods. As a conclusion, the pronator teres syndrome should be taken into consideration in patients with pain in volar surface of the proximal forearm and those with the carpal tunnel syndrome.
