Primary internal fixation in the treatment of radius and ulna diaphysis open fractures
Abstract
Between the years 1990 and 1996 38 patients, who were diagnosed as open fractures of radius and ulna diaphysis, were treated by the method of primary internal fixation at our Hospital. The distribution of open fractures according to Gustilo-Anderson classification stated as follows; 19 Type 1 (50%), 8 Type 2 (21%)and 11 Type 3 (29%). The mean follow-up period for these cases was 42 months (7-62 months). The mean union period was determined as 13,5 weeks and the otherhand, the union ratio as 95,45 %. In one of these cases, deep infection and conclusively nonunion, in two of them delayed union, and in one of them anguler deformity complications have been observed. In twenty two cases final examinations were realised and their functional results were obtained. According to Andersons's evaluation scale in twelve of these above mentioned cases the results proved to be excellent (54, 54%), in seven good (31,81%), in two fair (9,09%) and in one poor (4,54%). The severity of the soft tissue injury and the prognosis have demonstrated an inversely proportional relationship. This study has proved that the primary internal fixation which was applied following a careful and precise irrigation and debritman has been a very succesfull method in the treatment of open fractures of radius and ulna diaphysis.
