Our results in ankle fusion with modified Blair technique

Abstract

The ankle fusion with modified Blair technique was performed in nine patients at the between April 1993 and February 1996. Six of them were male and others were female. The mean age was 48.3 years old. The etiology was post traumatic arthrosis in six patients and degenerative arthrosis in two and severe instability in last one as a result of large resection of ankle ligament and capsule because of recurrent aggressive giant cell tendon tumor. The average follow up period was 14 months. The fusion was obtained in all cases. No serious complication was seen. In conclusion, we think that the modified Blair technique is useful alternative methods on ankle fusion in following reasons: the foot appears relatively normal, little shortening is produced on the extremity, it allows subtalar motions, the fusion rate is high, its surgical technique is simple, its cost is inexpensive and it does not need to bone graft.
