Evaluation of the effect of femoral lengthening on articular cartilage of the hip

Abstract

We performed femoral lengthening using Ilizarow fixator in ten adult sheep to evaluate the effect of the lengthening on articular cartilage of the hip. We preferred that the level of corticotomy was in the subtrochanteric region of the femur. Lengthening at the rate of 1,0 mm per day (0,5 mm in the morning and 0,5 mm in the evening) was carried out. Lengthening was stopped at the end of sixth week. On the radiological evaluation of experimental and contralateral hip joints, severe narrowing of the experimental hip was observed and there was 20% flexion limitation of this hip. Accorrding to this study, femoral lengthening causes some problems in the effected hip and knee joints. If this situation is not considered it could cause arthrosis of the hip joint in the future.

Femoral uzatmaların kalça eklemi üzerine olan etkilerinin değerlendirilmesi (Deneysel Çalışma)

Öz

Femoral uzatmaların kalça eklemine olan etkilerini değerlendirmek için 10 yetişkin koyunda ilizarov tipi eksternal fiksatör kullanarak femurdan uzatma işlemi sabah 0.5 mm. akşam 0.5 mm olacak şekilde planlandı. Ortalama 6. hafta sonunda uzatma işlemi durduruldu. Yapılan radyolojik değerlendirmelerde uzatma yapı-lan femurların kalça ekleminde diğer kalçaya oranla ciddi bir daralma dikkatimizi çekti. Bu daralmanın yanı sıra ortalama %20 oranında kalçalarda fleksiyon kısıtlılığı görüldü. Bu çalışmamızın sonucuna göre femoral uzatmalar diz ekleminin yanı sıra kalça ekleminde de problemler oluşturmaktadır. Bu durum göz önüne alın-madığı takdirde ileride kalça ekleminde artroza sebep olabilir.
