The changes in residual volume, total lung capacity and vital capacity after the posterior fusion for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis

Abstract

We evaluated pre and postoperative pulmonary functions of 48 patients who underwent posterior fusion for the adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. The mean age at the time of surgery was 13±1.5 years. Average follow-up time was 2.7 years. The predicted pulmonary volumes of the patients were used to eliminate any effect of the difference in age. In this study we didn't found any relation between the pre and postoperative frontal and sagittal plane Cobb angles and pulmonary volumes. Only for the residual volume there was a significant increase but the increase for the vital capacity and forced vital capacity were not significant. There was also no significant effect of the chosen method of correction as translation or derotation.
