Bone transport technique in defect pseudarthroses in children

Abstract

Seven children with defect pseudarthroses were treated by Ilizarov method in our clinic between 1992-1997. The reasons of defects were osteomyelitis in 3 patients, congenital pseudarthroses of the tibia in 2 patients, tumor resection in one patients, and trauma in one patients. Defect pseudarthroses was localized in the tibia of 5 patients, in the femur of one, and both the femur and tibia in one patient. Preoperative evaluation was done by Paley criteria: 5 cases were B1, 2 cases were B3. Four cases had infection preoperatively. We used bifocal technique in 6 patients and trifocal technique in one patients. Median follow up which started after complet consolidation and extraction of fixator were 19.4 months (5-58). Radiologically 7 patients had excellent results and functionally 4 had excellent, 3 had good results according to Paley criteria. We believe that Ilizarov method is the best treatment alternative of infected or noninfected defect pseudarthroses in children.
