Screening for developmental dysplasia of the hip by physical examination during the neonatal period: Follow-up with hip ultrasonography
Abstract
Early detection of developmental dysplasia of the hip is vital for a simple and effective treatment, but there is no consensus on the method of screening. In this prospective study, 317 babies were examined soon after birth for hip dysplasia. 626 hips were found to be normal and 8 hips were unstable with the Barlow test. All the hips were reevaluated at a mean of 49.6 ± 29 SD days of age by physical examination and ultrasonography. Of the originally normal group, eight hips necessitated treatment, one for dislocation and seven for dysplasia. Only three of the eight had risk factors for dysplasia. All the unstable hips developed normally. Early physical examination does not prevent late cases of hip dysplasia and follow-up of all infants with ultrasound may help to eradicate the problem.
