The fate of autogenous endochondral bone grafts in soft tissue

Abstract

The fate of autogenous, non-vascularized iliac (endochondral) bone grafts were studied in ten growing "New Zelland White Rabbits" in two different types of soft tissue envelope. The bone grafts harvested from the iliac crest were placed in subcutaneous and intramuscular pockets dissected in the anterior abdominal wall of each animal. The wet weight of each bone grafts were measured at insertion and at removal after 16 weeks and representative histological sections were studied . Bone grafts placed in both recipient sites had a high resorption rate: however there was greater resorption of endochondral bone grafts placed intramuscularly (78%) than subcutaneously (56%). This difference in wet weight was statisticaly significant (p=0.01).
