The comparison of closed reduction-percutaneous pinning procedure with open reduction-internal fixation in the surgical treatment of children’s humerus supracondylar fractures
Abstract
In this study, we aimed to compare and evaluate the results of children’s humerus supracondylar fractures treated with either closed reduction-percutaneous pinning or open reduction-internal fixation procedures. Between September 1992 - September 1997, there were 52 case which were operated on for supracondylar fractures; and 23 out of the total (44.2 %) went to closed reduction - percutaneous pinning (CRPP) while 29 case (55.8%) to open reduction - internal fixation (ORIF) operations. The mean age were 7.4 years in CRPP group and 7.9 years in ORIF group. The functional and cosmetic evaluation of the cases were done according to the Flynn criteria. The carrying angle alteration evaluations according to Flynn criteria revealed us excellent and good results in 87.0 % of CRPP and 82.8% of ORIF cases (p=0.6603) while motion loss evaluations proved to be excellent and good results in 95.7 % of CRPP and 69.0 % of ORIF cases (p=0.0206). Considering these results, it was clear that CRPP procedure was statistically superior to ORIF for having lesser motion loss, operation and hospitalization times. No statistically difference was obtained between the two, in terms of Baumann angle and carrying angle deviations; hence closed reduction-percutaneous pinning procedure was apperantly superior to the open reduction-internal fixation procedure.
