Treatment of posterior locked fracture dislocation of the shoulder with hemiarthroplasty

Treatment of posterior locked fracture dislocation of the shoulder with hemiarthroplasty

Abstract

Objectives: Functional results of hemiarthroplasty procedure in the treatment of patients with posterior locked fracture dislocation of the shoulder were evaluated. Methods: Five shoulders of four patients (3 men, 1 woman; mean age 62.25 years) who underwent hemiarthroplasty were evaluated. The mean length of time between the occurrence of trauma and surgery was 8.4 months (range 6-11 months). Evaluation of pain and function was made using visual analogue scale. Patients were also assessed by the Constant functional shoulder score. The mean follow-up was 30.8 months (18-48 months). Results: The mean preoperative and postoperative Constant functional shoulder scores were 21.2 and 78, respectively. Visual analogue scale scores showed significantly decreased pain and increased function. The mean external rotation of the shoulders increased from -9° to 8°. No postoperative infections developed. During follow-up, recurrent dislocation and prosthesis loosening were not observed. Conclusion: Hemiarthroplasty of the shoulder is a reliable technique in the treatment of posterior locked fracture dislocation of the shoulder in cases in which glenoid articular surface is not injured.
