Fine needle aspiration cytology of giant cell tumors

Abstract

Objectives: To evaluate cytologic findings of giant cell tumors using fine needle aspiration (FNA) and to determine their differential features from other benign and malignant lesions containing giant cells. Methods: Fine needle aspiration was performed in seven lesions with a clinical and radiological diagnosis of giant cell tumor. The slides were stained using the Papanicolaou method. The results were compared with those of histopathology of subsequent open biopsies. Results: Sufficient material was obtained in five cases. Numerous multinucleate giant cells adjacent to stromal cell clusters were consistent with giant cell tumor. In two cases, evaluation was not possible due to hemorrhagic material with low cellularity. Conclusion: Fine needle aspiration may play a valuable role in the diagnosis of giant cell tumors when used in conjunction with clinical and radiographic findings.
