A case of isolated tuberculous tenosynovitis of the tibialis anterior tendon

Abstract

Musculoskeletal tuberculosis is mostly localized in the spine, hip, knee, and other joints. Involvement of tendons, especially tuberculous tenosynovitis in the foot and ankle is very rare. We present a case of tuberculous tenosynovitis of the tibialis anterior tendon in a 28-year old man. No other systemic symptoms or other foci of tuberculous infection were detected and diagnosis of tuberculosis was hindered by nonspecific bacteria obtained from several smear cultures of the drainage from sinus openings. Surgical debridement followed by antituberculosis chemotherapy for 12 months enabled eradication of the disease. Othopedists should consider tuberculosis in the differential diagnosis of chronic atypical soft tissue infections when no response is obtained to appropriate antibiotic therapy or recurrences are encountered.
