Reconstruction of the traumatic loss of the thumb using the great toe

Abstract

Since the thumb serves 40-50% of all hand functions, its absence due to traumatic or congenital reasons requires reconstruction. The aim of reimplantation using microsurgery is to obtain functional adequacy, stability, sensitivity, mobility, and motor control. Despite various techniques of implantation, transport of the great toe to the thumb by microsurgery is the method of choice. A forty-one-year-old male patient with traumatic thumb amputation underwent microsurgical reconstruction using the distal portion of the great toe on the same side. The great toe was reduced in size before reconstruction and the remaining skin flap used to repair the toe defect. After a follow-up of three years, albeit quite limited innervation, the patient was satisfied with the sensitivity achieved and he was back to his previous employment.
