Basic principles of circular external fixators in the treatment of bone defects and deformities

Abstract

Bone defects and deformities usually occurring due to high energy traumas such as traffic accidents and gun-shut injuries have been one of the most challenging issues for orthopaedists. Distraction osteogenesis, which was first described and employed by Gavril Abramovich Ilizarov in 1950’s, has opened a new era in the treatment of bone defects and deformities when used with circular external fixators allowing movements in every direction and plane. Yet, in order to achieve success, it is essential that basic principles described by Ilizarov be adhered to. In this review, basic knowledge on distraction osteogenesis and biomechanics of circular external fixators are reviewed in the light of the current literature.
