Osteoid osteomas localized in the proximal femur

Abstract

Objectives: We retrospectively evaluated patients with osteoid osteoma localized in the proximal femur. Methods: Twelve patients (8 males, 4 females) underwent surgery for osteoid osteomas localized in the proximal femur. The mean age was 15 years (range 6 to 32 years). Ten patients presented with pain responsive to salicylates. The mean follow-up period was three years (range 8 months to 9 years). Results: In nine cases, the nidus was removed with curettage and shaving by using the lateral approach. In three patients, cancellous bone grafting was performed after curettage. Three patients underwent en bloc resection via the medial adductor approach. Preoperative diagnosis was confirmed by histologic examination in nine patients. No recurrences were observed during the follow-up. Conclusion: We concluded that satisfactory results can be achieved with curettage, drilling, and cortical shaving in the treatment of osteoid osteomas located in the proximal femur.
