Functional and symptomatic scoring used for the assessment of outcome in carpal tunnel release

Abstract

Objectives: This study was designed to evaluate the use of the Boston Questionnaire, a functional and symptomatic scoring system, in the treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Methods: The Boston Questionnaire was administered to patients who underwent surgery for CTS. Preoperatively 34 patients and postoperatively 15 patients (12 females, 3 males; mean age 50.7 years; range 18 to 65 years) were evaluated. The mean follow-up was 17.4 months (range 3 to 28 months). Results: The mean scores on symptom severity (from 3.6 to 1.2) and functional capacity (from 3.3 to 1.3) showed significant decreases postoperatively (p<0.0001). Conclusion: The Boston Questionnaire seems to be a valuable tool in the evaluation of symptomatic and functional conditions of patients in CTS treatment.
