Arthroscopic meniscal repair with the use of T-fix

Abstract

Objectives: We evaluated our preliminary results in arthroscopic meniscal repairs with the use of T-fix. Methods: Forty-seven patients (35 males, 12 females; mean age 27 years; range 16 to 40 years) underwent meniscal repair with the use of T-fix. Arthroscopic repair was performed in the right knees in 29 patients, and in the left knees in 18 patients. The localization of tears was medial and lateral in 32 and 15 patients, respectively. Eleven patients had coexistent anterior cruciate ligament ruptures; all were reconstructed at the same session except for one patient with older age and sedentary lifestyle. Second-look arthroscopy was performed in 18 patients. Postoperative functional results were evaluated using the modified Marshall scoring system. The mean follow-up was 26 months (range 12 to 60 months). Results: The mean length of tears was 26 mm (range 10 to 40 mm). They were unstable, of longitudinal type, and were localized between the posterior horn and the body. Thirty-four tears were in Cooper zone 1 (red-red) and 13 were in zone 2 (red-white). The overall number of T-fix used in the repairs was 163, with a mean of three (range 2 to 5) per patient. Functional results were excellent in 32 patients, good in 10 patients, fair in two patients, and poor in three patients. According to the Henning’s criteria, 15 tears healed on second-look arthroscopy. Of these, six tears were repaired together with anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. No neurovascular complications were encountered. Conclusion: Repair of the menisci using T-fix proved successful and reliable. In view of satisfactory functional results and the observation of healing of tears on second-look arthroscopy, we believe that preservation and repair of menisci should be aimed in appropriate cases
