The effect of linear polarized polychromatic light (bioptron) on wound healing in rats

Abstract

Objectives: We assessed the effect of linear polarized polychromatic light on wound healing in rats. Methods: The study included 10 Sprague-Dawley rats (mean age 6 months; mean weight 220 g). Two rats were excluded because of mortality by anesthesia-induced complications. Under general anesthesia, two surgical wounds were induced on the back of the rats, being 1.5 cm in diameter and localized proximally and 5-10 cm distally, respectively. Proximal wounds were treated with bioptron therapy for four minutes plus physiologic saline solution once a day, while distal wounds were treated with only physiologic saline solution. The duration of wound healing was determined by inspection and compared between the two treatment groups. Results: The mean healing periods of wounds treated with and without bioptron therapy were 15 days (range 14-16 days) and 25.1 days (range 24-26 days), respectively (p<0.05). No complications were observed throughout the treatment. Conclusion: Treatment with linear polarized polychromatic light seems to accelerate wound healing process.
