A new orthosis Birmingham device that we have use in the treatment of perthes disease

Abstract

Birmingham splint keeps the femoral head into the acetabulum (by flexion, abduction and internal rotation) during conservative treatment of the perthes disease and loading is also prevented by this splint. Between October 1982 and October 1984 this type of splints were applied to 22 perthes cases. Four of them gave up treatment, in four cases treatment were completed and in 14 cases are still use the splints. Our opinion is Birmingham splint is a useful splint for conservative treatment of the perthes disease. Results of our four cases, our impression about the cases which are still under the treatment and results of the other authors support to our opinion.
