Surgical treatment of complex dislocation of the metacarpophalangeal joint of the thumb

Abstract

Four cases of complex dislocation of the metacarpophalangeal joint of the thumb are presented. Peculiar anatomy of this dislocation which prevents reduction by closed methods and requires open reduction is studied. Two of our cases were recent dislocations, the motion of the thumb returned to its normal after open reduction. Other two of our cases were late, unreduced dislocations (6 months, 1 year) arthrodesis of the M-P joint had to be carried out.
