Diagnosis of meniscal and anterior cruciate ligament tears with Magnetic Resonance Imaging findings, compared with arthroscopy

Abstract

MR imaging (MRI) as a noninvasive, painless and radiation free method, is being used in the diagnosis of the knee lesions recently. From January 1993 to September 1995 one hundred eighty patients (one hundred eighty-five knees) who had knee problems were examined by MRI. The mean age was 33.2 years, 121 were men and 59 were women. Arthroscopy was performed within two months of MRI examination and findings were compared. The accuracy of MRI in our series was 80% for medial meniscal tears, 90.8% for lateral meniscal tears, 97.8% for ACL lesions. Because of the excellent diagnostic correlation of MRI and Arthroscopy in meniscal and ligament tears and in differentiation of other lesions of the knee, we believe that MRI is a safe and noninvasive method in diagnosis of the knee problems.
