Between january 1983 and june of 1985, data were recorded consevutively on patients undergoing forefoot surgery. 582 operations were perfomed on 523 patients, 90% of whom where women. In 83% of cases, the primary diagnosis was hallux valgus. 13% of the patients had problems caused by hallux rigidus and in 4% the prımary diagnosis was metatarsalgia. This work suggests that deformities and disfunction at the first metatarsophalangeal joint should be treated early in order to prevent further involvement of the forefoot.
