The effect of active motion and immobifisation of the knee joint alter reparing the articular cartilage defects with free periosteal and osteoperiosteal autogralts were investigated. Free periosteal and osteoperiosteal grafts were transplanted with the cambium layer facing to the knee joint Twenty-four rabbits were divided to four groups Group 2 and group 4 were immobilized while group 1 and group 3 were allowed to active motion. Three weeks alter surgery, the results were assessed by the gross appearance and histology. There were no differences between the groups macroscopically (p>0.05). In histological examination, fibrous tissue was the predominant tissue in all groups while hyaline cartiiage was 18 per cent at the end of three weeks. As a result, periosteal and osteoperiosteal autogralts have a chondrogenic potentiall in rabbits and active motion had no superior effect on new tissue formation within three weeks compared to immobilization.
