Adaptive changes in bone cortex of feet in ballet dancers

Year 1996, Volume: 30 Issue: 4, 404 - 406, 11.09.2006

Abstract

Many people think of ballet as being an aesthetic and harmless dance form. But dancers pay a heavy price for their art. The early training of the young dancer is very strenuous and brings abnormal stresses to particularly the lower extremities and feet. This may result in injuries pathologically not different from those in sports but differing in etiology and significance. An this study we aimed to determine the adaptive changes that take place in the young dancers' feet to cope with these stresses and prevent injuries. Radiographs of 49 ballet students training in the state conservatory were evaluated for adaptive changes in the bone cortex. Cortical hypertrophy was seen in especially the 2 nd, 3 rd and 1 st metatarsal bones in various degrees. It was noted that these changes take place earlier in girls and that the severity of the changes are parallel to the duration of training. We concluded that these asymptomatic changes are the result of chronic strain in the lower extremity and that they are protective against stress fractures.

Bale dansçılannda ayak kemiklerinin kemik kortekslerinde görülen adaptiv değişiklikler
