The mechanical performance of hybrid Ilizarov frames containing full threaded Schanz screws

Abstract

If the anatomic sites and clinical condition are unfeasible to apply a standard frame, completing the system with drop wires or Schanz screws is the most rational way to construct a circular Ilizarov frame. For this purpose; hybrid frame configurations consist of half pins or full threaded Schanz screws that were developed to overcome the mechanical drawback of the half pins, are widely used in our clinic. In this study, mechanical performance of such hybrid frames and standard system were compared. One standard with double rings on each bone fragment and five modified hybrid systems were loaded on a Material Testing Machine with axial compression, four point bending and torsion, and overall stiffness were tested. As a result, systems that were modified with full threaded Schanz screws showed a higher stiffness than half pin modifications and exhibit nearly the same mechanical performance of standard system.

Tam yivli Schanz vidaları île oluşturulan hibrid Ilizarov sistemlerinin mekanik performansı (Deneysel çalışma)

Abstract

Standart Ilizarov frame sisteminin kurulamayacağı anatomik bölgelerde ve klinik koşullarda, sistemin drop tel ya da Schanz vidaları ile tamamlanması en akılcı yoldur. Kliniğimizde bu amaçla, 5 mm düz Schanz vidaları veya bunların mekanik yetersizlikleri gözönüne alınarak geliştirilen 6 mm'lik tam yivli Schanz vidaları ile kurulabilen hibrid frame konfigürasyonları denenmektedir. Çalışmamızda, Schanz vidalı hibrid sis-temlerin mekanik performansları araştırılarak, standart sistemle karşılaştırılmıştır. Bu amaçla; biri standart ikişer çemberli, diğerleri kısmen Schanz vidaları kullanılarak hazırlanan altı frame sistemine aksiyel kompresyon, dört nokta bükülme (ön-arka, yan) ve torsiyon testleri yapılmıştır. Sonuçta tam yivli Schanz vidaları ile oluşturulan hibrid sistemin mekanik performansı düz Schanz vidalı şişleme göre belirgin üstünlük gösterirken; standart şişleme yakın sıkılıkta olduğu saptanmıştır
