The Kiiltepe texts, the oldest written sources which shed light
on the ancient history of Anatolia, contain hundreds of
geographical names. These names have been classified in various
ways and one has tried to identify and when possible localize the
towns and cities on the basis of similarity to our identity with
geographical names known from the Hittite period and even, when
possible, of the classical times. Linguistic arguments also have
been used, in so far as the lexical roots, suffixes and prefixes of the
names are considered to be at home in a particular linguistic area,
which would mean nearness to the known or presumed centres of
these areas.
