EFFECTS OF POTASSIUM CHLORIDE TREATMENT AND TREATMENT TIMES ON SEED AND SEEDLING VARIABLES OF BLACK PINE (Pinus nigra subsp. pallasina) SEEDS STORED FOR DIFFERENT YEARS

Abstract

Anatolian black pine (Pinus nigra subsp. pallasiana) is the second most common pine species in Türkiye, and it is a suitable tree species for afforestation of arid and semi-arid lands. To produce seedlings, collecting and storing black pine seeds until they are used is necessary. During long-term storage, black pine seeds lose their viability and priming treatments may rejuvenate seeds to restore germinability. The present study was carried out to study the effects of potassium chloride (%2, %3) and application times (6, 12, 24 h) on germination and seedling variables of black pine seeds stored for 3 (2019), 7 (2015) and 14 (2008) years after collection. Germination percentage decreased with storage time, priming application time significantly affected all parameters, and the best results were obtained from the 24 h treatment. Germination percentage and normal seedling percentage increased with priming applications, but mean germination time, seedling and root lengths did not change within seed lots. Potassium chloride doses did not differ in their effects. Results showed that potassium chloride may be used to increase germination and normal seedling percentage when seeds are not very old and lost their germination ability.

Abstract

Anadolu karaçamı (Pinus nigra subsp. pallasiana), Türkiye'de ikinci en yaygın olarak bulunan kurak ve yarı kurak alanların ağaçlandırılması için uygun bir çam türüdür. Fide üretimi için kullanılacak karaçam tohumlarının toplanması ve depolanması gerekmektedir. Uzun süreli depolama sırasında karaçam tohumları canlılıklarını kaybeder, ancak tohum uygulamaları sayesinde tohum canlılıkları artırılabilir. Mevcut çalışmada potasyum klorür dozlarının (%2, %3) ve uygulama sürelerinin (6, 12, 24 saat), 3 (2019), 7 (2015) ve 14 (2008) yıl depolanan karaçam tohumlarında çimlenme ve fide özellikleri üzerine olan etkileri incelenmiştir. Çimlenme yüzdesi depolama süresiyle azalmış, priming uygulamalarının ve sürelerinin tüm parametreler üzerinde önemli etkileri olduğu bulunmuş ve en iyi sonuçlar 24 saatlik uygulamadan elde edilmiştir. Çimlenme yüzdesi ve normal fide yüzdesi priming uygulamalarıyla artmış, ancak ortalama çimlenme süresi, fide ve kök uzunlukları uygulama grupları arasında değişmemiştir. Potasyum klorür dozları arasında önemli bir farklılık gözlenmemiştir. Sonuçlar, potasyum klorürün tohumlar çok yaşlı olmadığı ve çimlenme yeteneklerini kaybetmediğinde çimlenmeyi ve normal fide yüzdesini artırmak için kullanılabileceğini göstermiştir.
