DEVELOPING GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS IN FORESTRY: A MODEL APPLICATION
Abstract
The increasing demand for the forest resources and the variety of other forest values can only be satisfied through the practice of sustainable forest management. The present information technology provides ample opportunity to realize a sound forest management. Geographic information system (GIS), managing the spatial data (graphic and attribute), play and important role in establishing the necessary infrastructure to carry out forest management activities. It is therefore important to acquire the spatial data and carefully design the data base for it. Variety and the complexity of the spatial data, however, necessitate to develop a systematic approach to acquire, store, manage, query and analyze the spatial information. Here, we developed a preliminary database design including capturing and organizing spatial data as well as creating database schema and data dictionary towards the establishment of orest information system using GIS. We tested the data base in a small forest management unit.
