Seed Germination Characteristics of Christ's Thorn and Pomegranate

Abstract

Effects of some pre-treatments (scarification and cold stratification) on seed performance of Christ's thorn and pomegranate were investigated in this study.  All seeds were collected from their natural habitats in Artvin, Turkey.  Pretreatments of scarification with sulfuric acid, cold stratification or scarification with sulfuric acid followed by cold stratification were applied to the seeds for dormancy removal. The seed of the species show a high degree of dormancy. Responses in germination varied and were clearly influenced by the methods used to break dormancy in the two species, and a combination of scarification and stratification resulted in highest germination percentages and germination rates in the species. Scarification with sulfuric acid for 30, 40, 50 or 60 min followed by 40 days cold stratification in  Christ's thorn gave the
highest germination performance. Seed germination of  Christ's thorn following scarification for 40 min followed by 40 days stratification were also affected by temperature and provenance. The maximum value of germination performance was obtained when pomegranate seeds were scarified with concentrated sulfuric acid for 10 min and then cold-stratified for 60 days.

Karaçalı (Paliurus spina-christi Mill.) ve Nar (Punica granatum L.) Tohumlarının Çimlenme Özelliklerinin Belirlenmesi

Abstract

Bu çalışmada, Artvin İlinde doğal olarak yetişen karaçalı ve nar türlerine ait tohumların çimlenme özelliklerinin belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Karaçalı tohumlarında çimlenme engelinin giderilebilmesi amacı ile kontrol işlemi ile birlikte H2SO4 ile muamele (9 farklı süre), soğuk-nemli katlama (5 farklı süre) ve H2SO4 + soğuk-nemli katlama kombinasyonu (18 farklı işlem) olmak üzere toplam 33 farklı ön işlem uygulanmıştır. Karaçalı türünde yapılan ön işlemler sonucu en yüksek çimlenme yüzdesi ve çimlenme hızı değerlerinin sülfürik asit+soğuk-nemli katlama işlemleri sonucu elde edildiği belirlenmiştir. Orijinin ve çimlendirme sıcaklığının karaçalı tohumlarının çimlenmesi üzerine etkisini belirleyebilmek amacı ile üç farklı orijinde iki farklı sıcaklıkta (20 ˚C ve 25/20 ˚C) 40 dakika sülfürik asit ile işlem + 40 gün soğuk-nemli katlama işlemini takiben yapılan çimlendirme denemeleri sonucu, orijin ve çimlendirme sıcaklığının çimlenme yüzdesi ve çimlenme hızını etkilediği ve çimlenme performansının 25/20 ˚C de yapılan çimlendirme denemelerinde daha yüksek olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Nar tohumlarında çimlenme engelinin giderilebilmesi amacı ile kontrol işlemi ile birlikte H2SO4 ile muamele (4 farklı süre), soğuk-nemli katlama (3 farklı süre) ve H2SO4 + soğuknemli katlama kombinasyonu (6 farklı işlem) işlemleri uygulanmıştır. Nar türünde 5 veya 10 dakika H2SO4 ile muamele + 60 gün soğuk katlama işlemi ve 10 dakika H2SO4 ile muamele + 40 gün soğuk katlama işlemi sonucu en yüksek çimlenme yüzdesi (>%90) elde edilirken en yüksek çimlenme hızı 10 dakika H2SO4 ile muamele + 60 gün soğuk katlama işlemi sonucu (PV=5.7) elde edilmiştir.
