Analysis of Nakkaş Osman’s Miniatures Named “Metâliü’s Saâde” by Iconographic and Iconological Criticism Method

Abstract

Nakkaş Osman is the chief miniaturist of the Ottoman Empire after the 16th century. Miniatures of Nakkaş Osman are frequently encountered in the descriptions in Seyyid Lokman’s manuscripts. Miniature is a traditional art that includes deep and detailed expressions using a plain and plain language. Miniatures are more common in books on astronomy, mythology, and legend/epic, where symbolic expressions are used extensively. “Metâliü’s Saâde,” one of Nakkaş Osman’s works, was chosen for this study because of its type, content, painting style, and semantic dimension of the miniature. In this study, the symbolic and narrative narration in Nakkaş Osman’s miniature, in which the planet Merih (Mars) is depicted in the manuscript called Metâliü’s Saâde, has been analyzed using iconographic and iconological criticism method. This method, which Erwin Panofsky formulated on three stages of meaning, has contributed greatly to the analysis of works in the art world since the 20th century. Nakkaş Osman’s miniatures are examined under three subheadings as pre-iconographic review (natural meaning), iconographic description (concordant meaning), and iconological description (internal meaning). As a result of this study, it has been determined that Nakkaş Osman reflects the effects, thought, and perspective of Ottoman culture and civilization on his miniatures and establishes relationships between planets, representative elements, and professions in addition to depiction of horoscope and planet.
