Determination Teacher Candidates' Perceptions of the Concept of Future Through Metaphors

Abstract

In this study, it was aimed to determine teacher candidates’ perceptions of the concept of future through metaphors. The research group of the study consisted of 70 teacher candidates studying at Sakarya University Faculty of Education in the 2023-2024 academic year. The teacher candidates participating in this study, which was designed as a qualitative research in descriptive survey model, were asked to complete the statement "the future is like ...............; because .................". The data collected in the study were analyzed by descriptive analysis method and each participant was identified with codes (K-1, K-2). The explanations of the teacher candidates regarding the metaphors which they developed were taken into consideration and the metaphors were analyzed under 8 different themes. These themes are "uncertainty and change", "hope and optimism", "past-present-future connection", "progress and technology", "dream and discovery", "chance and game", "subjective experience", "shaping and controlling the future". As a result of the analysis, it was determined that teacher candidates developed a total of 54 metaphors. It was understood that 46 of these metaphors were positive and 8 of them were metaphors corresponding to negative expressions.

Öğretmen Adaylarının Gelecek Kavramına İlişkin Algılarının Metaforlar Aracılığıyla Belirlenmesi

Abstract

Bu araştırmada öğretmen adaylarının gelecek kavramına ilişkin algılarının metaforlar aracılığıyla belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Çalışmanın araştırma grubunu 2023-2024 eğitim-öğretim yılında Sakarya Üniversitesi Eğitim Fakültesinde öğrenim gören 70 öğretmen adayı oluşturmuştur. Betimsel tarama modelinde nitel bir araştırma olarak tasarlanan bu araştırmaya katılan öğretmen adaylarından, “gelecek ............... gibidir; çünkü ……………..” ifadesini tamamlamaları istenmiştir. Araştırmada toplanan veriler betimsel analiz yöntemiyle analiz edilmiş ve her bir katılımcı kodlarla (K-1, K-2) belirtilmiştir. Öğretmen adaylarının geliştirdikleri metaforlara ilişkin açıklamaları dikkate alınmış ve metaforlar 8 ayrı tema altında toplanacak şekilde analiz edilmiştir. Bu temalar “belirsizlik ve değişim”, “umut ve iyimserlik”, “geçmiş-bugün-gelecek bağlantısı”, “ilerleme ve teknoloji”, “hayal ve keşif”, “şans ve oyun”, “öznel deneyim”, “geleceği şekillendirme ve kontrol etme” temalarıdır. Gerçekleştirilen analizler neticesinde öğretmen adaylarının toplamda 54 metafor geliştirdiği belirlenmiştir. Bu metaforlardan 46’sının olumlu, 8’inin ise olumsuz ifadelere karşılık gelen metaforlar olduğu anlaşılmıştır.
