The Importance of Health Care Workers' Compliance with Infection Prevention Rules During the Pandemic-A Survey Study

Abstract

Aim: Healthcare workers are at risk of contracting life-threatening infectious diseases due to contact with patients' blood, mucus, discharge or aerosol droplets. Especially during epidemics, this risk is higher among healthcare workers than among the general population. In our study, it was aimed to determine the relationship between the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) before and after the diagnosis of healthcare workers who were detected as a confirmed case in the COVID-19 epidemic. Material and Methods: In this retrospective cross-sectional study, 366 healthcare workers who were identified as confirmed cases in a tertiary hospital in Istanbul between 9 March 2019 and 1 August 2021 were included. In the study, a questionnaire consisting of descriptive features, hand hygiene compliance frequencies and PPE usage situations was used. Questionnaire questions were collected and analyzed online to healthcare professionals. Results: Our study was carried out on 33.3% (n=122) men and 66.7% (n=244) women. The answers given by healthcare professionals to the questions about PPE, hand hygiene compliance frequencies and PPE during an aerosol-generating procedure do not show a statistically significant difference (p>0.05). Discussion: As a result of our study, it was determined that there was no difference in the use of PPE, and new variants were seen as the cause, although the vaccination started in the healthcare workers and they had COVID-19 disease.

Pandemi Sırasında Sağlık Çalışanlarının Enfeksiyon Önleme Kurallarına Uyumunun Önemi-Bir Anket Çalışması

Abstract

Amaç: Sağlık çalışanları, hastaların kan, mukus, akıntı veya aerosol damlacıkları ile temas nedeniyle hayatı tehdit eden bulaşıcı hastalıklara yakalanma riski altındadır. Özellikle salgın hastalıklar sırasında, bu risk sağlık çalışanları arasında genel nüfusa göre daha yüksektir. Çalışmamızda COVID-19 salgınında konfirme vaka olarak tespit edilen sağlık çalışanlarının tanı almadan önce ve sonrasında kişisel koruyucu ekipman(KKE) kullanımları arasında ki ilişkinin belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Gereç ve Yöntemler: Bu retrospektif kesitsel çalışmaya İstanbul’da üçüncü basamak bir hastanede 9 Mart 2019 ile 1 Ağustos 2021tarihleri arasında konfirme vaka olarak tespit edilen 366 sağlık çalışanı dahil edildi. Çalışmada tanımlayıcı özellikler, el hijyen uyum sıklıkları ve KKE kullanım durumlarından oluşan anket kullanılmıştır. Anket soruları, sağlık çalışanlarına çevrim içi ortamda toplanarak analiz edilmiştir. Bulgular: Çalışmamız %33.3’ü (n=122) erkek, %66.7’si (n=244) kadın üzerinde gerçekleştirilmiştir. Sağlık çalışanlarının COVID-19 öncesine göre sonrası yöneltilen KKE, el hijyen uyum sıklıkları ve aerosol üreten bir işlem sırasında KKE sorularına verdikleri yanıtlar istatistiksel olarak anlamlı farklılık göstermemektedir (p>0.05). Tartışma Çalışmamızın sonucu olarak sağlık çalışanlarında aşılamanın başlamış olması ve COVID-19 hastalığını geçirmiş olmalarına rağmen KKE kullanımında farklılık olmadığı tespit edilmiş ve sebep olarak yeni varyantlar görülmüştür.
