ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF NURSES IN RAISING AWARENESS OF MALE BREAST CANCER

Year 2025, Volume: 11 Issue: 3, 173 - 192, 23.10.2025

Abstract

Male breast cancer (MBC) is considered a rare disease. The incidence of MBC has shown a significant increase in recent years and has been reported to account for 1.8% of all breast cancers. The fact that most men are unaware of their risk of developing breast cancer leads to the disease often being diagnosed at advanced stages. Male breast cancer is more common in older men and behaves similarly to postmenopausal breast cancer. A study has reported that age, hormonal imbalance, radiation exposure, and a family history of breast cancer are the most important risk factors for male breast cancer development. The BRCA2 gene mutation is the most significant risk factor for male breast cancer development. The most common clinical sign of male breast cancer is a painless, palpable retroareolar mass. There are very few well-conducted randomized controlled trials for the treatment of male breast cancer. Therefore, treatment standards for men are based on existing treatment guidelines derived from breast cancer studies conducted in women. Research indicates that men do not have sufficient knowledge about breast cancer; however, awareness can be increased through education provided by healthcare professionals and the media. Public policies and health campaigns should be expanded to include men as well, rather than being solely focused on women, to raise awareness of male breast cancer. Nurses play a key role in this process, and increasing their involvement in educational activities will contribute to raising awareness and knowledge about male breast cancer, supporting early detection of the disease. In conclusion, informing individuals about male breast cancer and recognizing the critical roles of healthcare professionals in this matter are of utmost importance..

ERKEK MEME KANSERİ FARKINDALIĞININ ARTIRILMASINDA HEMŞİRENİN ROL VE SORUMLULUKLARI

Year 2025, Volume: 11 Issue: 3, 173 - 192, 23.10.2025
