Abstract

EXPANSION OF URBAN CANYON AREAS IN ERZURUM AND CARES TO BE TAKEN IN TERMS OF LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE

Abstract

Cities are the points where anthropological activities take places most intensely. Such intensification and human interactions bring together economic prosperity, development and new opportunities. Increasing urban populations and unplanned spatial development cause cities to become uninhabitable places. It has also become inevitable for the indoor spaces created to provide housing and work opportunities to the increasing population that these buildings have to develop vertically and form urban parts with unfavourable features such as the urban canyon. Urban canyons have negative effects on human life and comfort by affecting climate elements such as temperature and wind in their surroundings. The aim of this study is; to deal with the brief definition and characteristics of urban canyons, to determine the areas which are expected to show the characteristics of an urban canyon in the Yakutiye district in Erzurum city center, to compare these areas according to certain standards, to determine the surface area that shows the characteristics of an urban canyon, and to offer solution proposals in order to eliminate the negative effects caused by these areas.
