Lithography Art in Turkey Between 1831-1920

Abstract

The lithography has a deep-rooted tradition based on centuries in European countries. Lithography is invented in Germany on 1796 as an alternative to intaglio and relief printing techniques, however, it is completely different from traditional printing techniques, and natural stones are used as a mold and emerged as a totally new method of preparing the stone with chemical reactions. In 1831, within the context of westernization movements, it is brought to our country in order to be used in printing and reproduction of materials for military training purposes. Over the time, it became the first lithography technique of our country by attracting attention of artists.

In this research, arrival process of lithography technique, which serves as a visual communication means in our country in both written and artistic areas, and afterwards, its contributions to Turkish culture and art will be examined. The lithography art of the republican era is a period of evolution, as it is in the other branch of arts. The role and development of lithography in the republican era and its transition from folk art to academic art within the Turkish lithography will be examined in a separate study.
