Effect of Methanol Extract of Usnea Longissima Ach. Lichen Species on Gastric Acid Secretion in In Vitro Rat Stomach
Abstract
Lichens are unity that commonly used in the alternative medicine. There are numerous studies on the biologic contents and activities of lichens. In this study, it has aimed that to investigate the effect of methanol extract obtained from Usnea longissima Ach lichen species on acid secretion in in vitro rat stomach. Our study were used 24 adult male Sprague-Dawley rats. Rats were euthanized under anesthesia. The stomach tissue was isolated and cleaned in a petri dish containing serosal solution. Emptying stomach contents was done with mucosal solution. The effects of the five different doses (0.012 µg/ml, 0.12 µg/ml, 1.2 µg/ml, 12 µg/ml, 120 µg/ml) of Usnea longissima Ach. methanol extract on gastric acid secretion were investigated in the presence and absence of antagonists of neuronal (acetylcholine) and paracrine (histamine) pathways in the isolated organ bath. In conclusion, it was obtained that different doses of Usnea longissima Ach. extract increased significantly the gastric acid secretion. It was arrive the opinion that of the gastric acid secretion enhancing effect of Usnea longissima Ach.'s is via the histamine mediated paracrine pathway.
