Mathematical models used for controlling animal diseases play a gradually important role to combat diseases for optimizing epidemic control strategies. Using mathematical models lead to both a better understanding of the epidemiology of diseases and exhibit more clear struggle strategies. SIR modeling provides valuable information regarding the epidemiology of diseases, the effectiveness of vaccinations, and requirements for completely controlling certain endemic diseases and outbreaks. Determining and interpreting the benefit of vaccination on both individual animals and the herds have an important place in planning animal health policies. In this review, the objectives of the basic reproduction number, vaccine coverage and effectiveness will be discussed for determining the targeted herd immunity to prevent outbreaks in several regions or regions with the description of the SIR model. The number needed for vaccination and criteria for assessing vaccination programs and planning herd health actions will be briefly explained.
