A Proposal for geographical proximity index at provincial level

Abstract

This study proposes a new geographical proximity index which is eligible for diverse human geography studies and urban studies and is interchangeable with spatial weight matrixes which are being used in explanatory spatial data analysis softwares. The study defends demographic connectivity emanating from out-migration and in-migration between provinces or geographical units can be taken as proxy of social proximity. The study measures demographic connectivity between the provinces with social network analysis techniques and combines it with gravity model of physic to define a new geographical proximity index. As it being defined at provincial level, the aforementioned index can be used some kind of studies based on social network analysis and spatial data analysis methods. In the concept of the study the index in question is calculated for 1990, 2000, 2010 and 2020 years and then tested via correlation and regression analysis with social network analysis technique.

İller Düzeyinde Coğrafi Yakınlık İçin Bir İndeks Önerisi

Abstract

Bu çalışma yeni bir coğrafi yakınlık indeksi önermektedir. Daha gerçekçi bir mekân temsilinin mümkün olabileceğini ileri süren çalışma, illerin birbirilerinden alıp verdiği nüfus üzerinden doğan demografik bağın, sosyal yakınlık göstergesi olarak alınabileceğini savunmaktadır. Çalışma, iller arası demografik bağlantısallığı sosyal ağ analizi tekniklerinden hareketle ölçerek bunu kütle çekim modeliyle birleştirmekte ve yeni bir coğrafi yakınlık indeksi tanımlamaktadır. Türkiye için iller düzeyinde tanımlanan söz konusu indeksin sosyal ağ ve mekânsal istatistik analizi yöntemlerine dayalı çalışmalarda kullanılabileceğini savunmaktadır. Bu amaçla 1990, 2000, 2010 ve 2020 yıllarına ait yakınlık matrisleri oluşturulmuş; ardından örnek kullanım amacıyla 2020 yılına ait iller arası ticaret miktarı ile oluşturulan indeks arasındaki ilişki sosyal ağ analizi yöntemiyle korelasyon ve regresyon analizine tabi tutularak test edilmiştir. Çalışmanın bulguları önerilen yakınlık indeksinin ağırlık matrisine ek olarak sosyal ağ analizi çalışmalarında da kullanılabileceğini göstermiştir.
