The Spatial, cultural and political context of food geography

Year 2025, Volume: 23 Issue: 2

Abstract

Introduction: Food geography goes beyond considering food solely as a biological necessity; it examines food within a complex web of socio-spatial relationships that encompass production, distribution, consumption, and waste processes. This approach is crucial for understanding the transformations of food in both global and local contexts. Today, food systems are directly linked to critical issues such as climate change, urbanization, social inequality, and cultural identity. This study aims to highlight the spatial, cultural, and political dimensions of food geography, a relatively underexplored area in academic literature, and to demonstrate its potential contributions to contemporary geographical thought.
Methodology: This research investigates food systems through spatial analysis at both rural and urban scales, evaluating the interactions between natural and human factors. Using qualitative research methods, the study also examines alternative food networks, food security, and food justice and their manifestations at the local level.

Findings: The findings reveal that food systems are shaped by dynamic relationships between the natural environment and social structures. In rural areas, agricultural production processes are transforming under the influences of climate change and land-use policies, while in urban areas, urban agriculture practices and alternative food networks are gaining prominence. Concepts such as food security and food justice have become particularly critical for low-income urban residents. Additionally, consumption habits are directly related to cultural identities, social classes, and spatial inequalities.
Conclusion: Food geography not only studies agricultural production processes but also evaluates consumption patterns, cultural representations, social inequalities, and policy frameworks through a holistic approach. In this regard, it distinguishes itself from traditional agricultural geography and occupies an important place within contemporary geographical thought. The study demonstrates how the spatial organization of food is intertwined with social fabric and emphasizes the importance of geographical contributions to making food systems more sustainable, equitable, and inclusive.

Mekânsal, Kültürel ve Politik Bağlamda Gıda Coğrafyası

Year 2025, Volume: 23 Issue: 2
https://doi.org/10.33688/aucbd.1722861
